New ransomware spreads globally.

You may have heard on the news that a new kind of ransomware (or malware) called Petya is spreading quickly through Europe and beyond. This cyber attack is the second major incident in the past two months via networks that utilize Microsoft Windows, following on the heels of the WannaCry (or WannaCrypt) strike that affected over 230,000 computers in more than 150 countries.

The attacks are being carried out through email phishing. Once inside, the malware holds your computer for ransom. Here are some steps you can take to stay cyber safe:

• Stay alert; don’t click on any untrusted links in emails

• Backup your most recent files and test their recovery

• Apply all Microsoft Windows updates on all your devices
